Understanding Home Depot Pricing Games
The Most important room in the house.
We like to cook, and I like to design kitchens layouts that are great for cooking, vs kitchens that are more for show and looks. Most people at the planning stages hear about the “Kitchen Triangle” great. It’s obvious, when you cook you mostly move between the sink the refrigerator and the stove. So don’t put the stove across from a huge island that you have to run around with handfuls of prepped veggies or wet fish fillets. Sometimes windows and doors will be in the way of a more sensible design. But there is usually a good work around or solution. That is where computer CAD designs rule. Computer designs make it much easier to move cabinets and make changes, and then visualize changes in photo real renderings or actual moving fly by videos. That can be very helpful for people that have a hard time visualizing the final result or people that aren’t sure what they want. Or just getting a better sense of the storage and seating. CAD drawings also help to pull together the top three, Cabinet color, Countertop color And floor color. Of course there are walls and accents but the top three are expensive and more permanent and more personal. Open shelves or glass? Well that depends on how organized you are. I don’t think that looking at cereal and pasta boxes crammed onto a shelf makes an inviting clean looking kitchen. I do like glass when people have nice things or tchotchke to display. Open shelves are only for the daring. Lighting is important and should be designed in. Look at the new LED lights that are coming out. They are super efficient, last for many years and have a really nice light color temperature. I like dimmable lights under wall cabinet, they brighten up the countertop and look cool. I like lights on top of cabinets, they ad ambiance to the room. Of course all work surfaces should have adequate lighting. That's right think about it. Where do people always congregate? The KITCHEN right? You have a party and where do all the people gather? Kitchens and food are focal points of social evolution.
Selling your house, the real estate agent will say that you want to have an updated and functional kitchen. So how's your kitchen? If it's not a focal point of your house then call me. I specialize in matching cabinets to character. And believe it or not it's not as expensive as you might think.Updated cabinets can make the whole house more inviting.
I like to say in the planing stages "Think of the parties you can have".

I want to talk for a minute about how the Cabinet industry has evolved it's pricing strategy. Lets start with Big Box. A while back when they got into the kitchen business. They decided that they needed a fake initial price that was really high.
That way they can THROW IN a FREE SINK BASE and a house discount and a manufacturers discount and Free soft close drawers and a spring break discount....etc etc.
I say go get a price from them, It's free and you can learn a lot.
Now for a reality check. Their base price is always for crappy particle board box construction. But you can pay for upgades 3 times, the sides to solid plywood, the sides and back to ply, or the whole box to ply don't forget the shelves. Particle board can sag over time, and is less water resistant than plywood.
OK take all the combined discounts off of the LIST price and the sink base etc and just compare the quality and price to a Summit Kitchen price. I'll beat the big box stores every time and it will be a higher quality cabinet. With a better finish.
Wait there's more. Never buy Granite from big box. Never have big box install the cabinets or do the work. You will pay dearly for their efforts, in time and money.
In closing, Summit Kitchen Design will give you better service and be easier to reach in the event of a problem! That is very important, just look in Consumer Complaints about HD, Lowes, lumber liquidators. You will find hundreds of complaints.
Kitchens are expensive and have many parts. You will be glad that you can call us on our cell phones and actually get someone who cares about you and wants a good referral for future business.
